Home :: The Eastern Edges

The eastern edge of the national park is popular for rock climbing. The gritstone edges begin at Stanage and weave their way south to Harland Edge above the village of Beeley, a distance of around 20 kilometers, occasionally broken by wide river valleys. Day trippers often use this area of the park for short walks, with Sheffield and Chesterfield only being a ten minute drive from the national park boundaries.

This eastern section of the park is also home to the Chatsworth Estate, in the Derwent Valley between Baslow and Rowsley. Chatsworth House is frequently voted as Britains favourite stately home, and its gardens are also inspiring.

The nortern and western boundaries of this section are marked by Howden Reservoir, and east towards Stocksbridge, Chesterfield and Rowsley in the south.

Sunset at Curbar Edge
These gristone edges were once a busy industrial site, as the stone was quarried to make millstones. Many are still on site, abandoned in their unfinished state.
